Representing 54 unions & one million workers the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL.ca) is Canada’s largest provincial labour federation

CUPW – 2012-04-27 – May 17 – The International Day Against Homophobia

http://www.cupw.ca/index.cfm/ci_id/14007…

On May 17, 1991, the World Health Organisation (WHO) removed homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses putting an end to over a century of homophobia in the medical field.
Today, May 17 is recognized by over 50 countries as the International Day Against Homophobia. It is a day to stand in solidarity with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) communities in opposition to homophobia and transphobia wherever it is found.
Global Human Rights Violations Demand a Response
Under article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, “everyone has the right to life, liberty and the security of person” irrespective of sexual orientation or gender identity.
This ideal is not the reality around the world. Homophobic and transphobic violence has been recorded in every region of the world and continues to be a global issue.
The first United Nations report on the human rights of LGBT people was released a few months ago during December 2011.
The report details how people around the world suffer hate-motivated violence, murder, torture, detention, criminalization and discrimination in jobs, health care and education because of their real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity.
76 of the UN’s 192 member countries have laws on the books criminalizing homosexual behaviour.
At least five countries impose the death penalty as punishment for same-sex relations.
Here in Canada and Quebec, the LGBT community continues to be discriminated against in their families, in employment, in access to health care, in education and in society
A Historic Shift Is Under Way
In his address to the Human Rights Council on March 2012, Ban Ki-moon spoke directly to the LGBT communities around the world:
“To those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, let me say: You are not alone. Your struggle for an end to violence and discrimination is a shared struggle…..A historic shift is under way…..The time has come.”
CUPW Stands In Solidarity
We call on everyone to stand in solidarity with our LGBT brothers and sisters to show them that they are not alone. You can show support by:
Attending May 17 events in our community;
Participating in school activities that create space for anti- bullying messages and acts of solidarity;
Attending Pride events in your community this summer;
Supporting the Private Member’s Bill (C-279), which would add protections for gender identity and gender expression;
Distributing material, including the CUPW trans poster, in your workplace or at your union meeting;
Speaking out against homophobia and heterosexism.
The time has come to put an end to homophobia and transphobia everywhere.
For more information on May 17th, the International Day Against Homophobia, visitwww.homophobiaday.org.
In solidarity,

Cindi Foreman
2nd National Vice-President

ONTARIO DAY OF ACTION: DEMAND PROSPERITY, NOT AUSTERITY April 21, 2012 @ 1:00 pm, Queen’s Park, Toronto

ONTARIO DAY OF ACTION: DEMAND PROSPERITY, NOT AUSTERITY

April 21, 2012 @ 1:00 pm, Queen’s Park, Toronto

Tell Premier McGuinty to build Ontario, not tear it apart.

Premier McGuinty put banker Don Drummond in charge of recommending nearly 400 cuts to jobs and public services in Ontario. At a time when Ontarians are in desperate need of economic recovery, these cuts will jeopardize every aspect of society: from health care to full-day kindergarten to pensions. No public service is safe. However, in McGuinty’s reckless plan to balance Ontario’s books by putting more people out of work and destroying the social safety net, he refuses to roll-back corporate tax cuts that are starving the province of billions of dollars that could be better used to create new jobs and help tens of thousands of struggling Ontario families to get back on their feet.

Ontarians from all sectors of society must come together to tell Premier McGuinty that he cannot cut his way to economic prosperity. Ontarians need a job creation strategy and it is time that banks and corporations began paying their fair share.

Join a mass rally at Queen’s Park at 1:00 pm on April 21 to demand prosperity, not austerity!

Distribute the attached call-out and poster (formatted for 11in x 17in or

8.5in x 11in printing).

Take these extra steps to help make the Day of Action Against Cuts a success:

• Invite friends on Facebook:http://on.fb.me/A21NoCuts

• Pass an emergency motion to support the Day of Action

• Appoint an organizer to coordinate your members

• Outreach to community and local Occupy activists

• Bring signs, banners and union flags to show support

• Secure funding for buses from your community

Labour Councils should approach affiliates for support in funding buses to Toronto. However, in circumstances where financial resources are lacking, the OFL can be approached to provide financial support. However, all subsidized buses must be filled!

Questions about mobilizing and logistics should be directed to:

Laurie Hardwick: 416-571-3087 orlhardwick@ofl.ca

Buses should be registered with the OFL:

Carrol Anne Sceviour: 416-443-7670 orcsceviour@ofl.ca

Help to mobilize your members, your families and your communities to stop the cuts and put Ontario on the road to economic recovery.

Our collective future depends on it.

In solidarity,

SID RYAN

President

Ontario Federation of Labour

Union Blacklists in Canada?

Canadian farms are working with Mexican consulates to blacklist migrant workers who talk union or do anything, anything at all, to stand up for their rights. UFCW Canada is taking on both in an imaginative campaign. Farms and foreign powers – when was the last time you had the chance to participate in a campaign like this one? Send an e-mail to the President of Mexico protesting the blacklisting by going HERE. Please pass this along to your contacts and suggest that they do the same.
